Penn Summit on Preparing Racially Proficient Teachers

SUMMARY

With featured speaker Dr. Howard Stevenson, Constance E. Clayton Professor of Urban Education and the author of Promoting Racial Literacy in Schools, center co-directors Dr. Shaun R. Harper and Dr. Ali Michael will lead a daylong workshop with a focus on supporting teachers in their development of racial proficiency and culturally aware pedagogy. The summit will consist of interactive workshops and keynote talks with emphasis on raising race questions, facilitation strategies, and long-term skill development for racial proficiency. The content will be relevant to teachers, teacher educators and administrators.

SUMMIT WORKSHOPS

TALKING ABOUT RACE
Why is it so difficult to talk about race? Why is talking about race in the classroom important? Summit attendees will work collaboratively with partners to engage these questions, and others, using the "Four Agreements" for talking about race framework.

FACILITATING STRATEGIES FOR CONVERSATIONS ABOUT RACE
This session discusses the ways in which supporting difficult conversations about race in the classroom, interrupting racist encounters (i.e., microaggressions), amplifying diverse voices, and negotiating privilege are all critically important in preparing racially proficient teachers in the classroom.

RAISING RACE QUESTIONS AND DEVELOPING LONG-TERM SKILLS FOR RACIAL PROFICIENCY
Using the book Raising Race Questions as a foundation, this workshop will focus on the importance of engaging race questions over time.  Learning about and how to grow the racial identities of teachers as well as their own inquiries about race over the course of the teaching careers is a process requiring the intentionality and purposeful action(s) discussed in this session.
